Zine Making: Sketching the City

This visual-storytelling workshop turns a short guided walk through a Berlin neighbourhood into a hands-on zine-making session. We'll begin just outside the studio in the Nordkiez area of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, a beautiful, lived-in part of the city where quiet, tree-lined streets give way to graffiti-covered corners. On our short guided walk, we'll pause to sketch, photograph, and collect small impressions along the way - a building with curious tiling, a particularly inquisitive pigeon, someone's forgotten orange umbrella on a Späti table. Nothing you notice needs to be 'big' or unusual; the workshop is about noticing the small, overlooked details that make a place feel alive.

Back indoors at the studio, we'll spend the rest of the session developing these sketches, photographs, impressions and collected pieces into a mini zine to take home: a small, tangible record of the walk and everything you noticed along the way.

The session is led by Asha Wilson, an accomplished illustrator and designer, who will guide the group through traditional illustrative techniques for making your zine. For anyone who'd rather collage than draw freehand, a cut-and-stick sheet of pre-drawn elements is on hand, so no drawing experience is necessary.

The workshop runs for 2.5 hours. All materials are provided, including paper for folding your zine, pens, colouring pencils, oil pastels, and a printed zine-folding guide. Make sure to bring your own sketchbook for sketching on the guided walk!

This is a very beginner-friendly session, and everyone is welcome to come and join in celebrating the city.
